    What is a “focus group” anyhow?

    For some people, they just aren’t familiar with what a focus group is in general.

    Focus group discussion is a research methodology in which a small group of participants gather to discuss a specified topic or an issue to generate data. The main characteristic of a focus group is the interaction between the moderator and the group, as well as the interaction between group members. The objective is to give the researcher an understanding of the participants’ perspective on the topic in discussion. Focus groups are rapidly gaining popularity in health and medical research. Focus groups are an important research tool within the context of health research, with the intention of promoting its use among researchers in healthcare.
    The healthcare industry is very large, and there are always many issues which we need your opinions on for our clients- some of them are for new cures for medical conditions, some are testing out new pieces of equipment, and for some we need to talk with practice managers for example on their opinions on the Affordable Care Act.
    These are usually very interesting for the participants as well as they have a chance to demonstrate their professional and real world knowledge.

    Therapists who treat cancer patients

    One of the most rewarding things we do at Focus Insite is when we recruit for medical market research studies. Just about everyone has a friend or loved one who has at some point suffered from a cancer diagnosis.

    What we pride ourself in is our vast network of oncology professionals we can recruit for studies. While most of the time we need nurses to test a new device or give us their opinions, for example for this latest study we are doing (link below) we are looking for physical therapists, occupational therapists, repiratory therapists, speech therapists, social workers and case managers who work with oncology patients.

    Whenever cancer is involved, despite all advances in treatments, one thing remains constant in that it is a very difficult diagnosis. Treatment advances, as well as a detailed care plan is pivotal, and understanding these issues from a medical professionals point, as well as the patients and their caregivers, is a bedrock of our research.

    Corporate Researchers Conference- Insights Association – October 2017

    October 2017- Chicago, Illinois was the place to be as the Insights Association held their annual CRC conference, or better known as  the Corporate Researchers Conference.

    While in today’s world, we are inundated with emails and slack and skype messages and where telephone has become the second means of communication, there is just no substitute for good face to face meetings. 

    We couldn’t believe the interest in the amount of market research needed in 2017 and 2018. 2018, with an emphasis on job growth and record stock market performance- it looks as if it will be an absolute boom for the market research world in 2018.

    The need for Qualitative Market Research Recruitment was high – with clients through the United States and Canada were looking to fill projects on various medical devices and new drug delivery methods. This site is dedicated to the medical side of our business, but there was significant upside in consumer research as well.

    While conferences are a great way to work on your business, rather than in the business, we listened to a great number of speakers- probably one of the best was Judd Antin, Airbnb’s Head of Research on Building Insights who was the research manager at Facebook before Air BNB.  

    Amazing because we used Air BNB for a room for the conference as well as took a number of Uber’s while we were in Chicago to the various corporate receptions which were held. These companies that didn’t exist 5 years ago, and it was all Uber, Lyft and Air BNB for rooms out there. A person in the booth next to us bought tickets for the Chicago Cubs World Series game right on his phone with the Stub Hub app. As much as we do market research on existing or new products, the exciting part is when a new service comes out of nowhere and disrupts the market.

    All in all, lots of great meetings and we’ve landed quite a few new clients as well as solidifying existing relationships in the qualitative recruitment space.

    Studies on ADPKD (Autosomoal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease)

     

    Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease

    ADPKD is a serious disease characterized by progressive development of cysts and bilateral enlargement of kidneys with multiple cysts. This is a genetic disease that occurs as a result of mutations in either of the PKD-1 or PKD-2 gene. The cysts begin to form in the womb of the mother from any place along the nephron, although <5% of the total number of nephrons are involved in the pathological process. As the bones accumulate fluid, they increase, completely separating from the nephron (functional unit of the kidney), compress the neighboring kidney tissue, which gradually jeopardizes kidney function.

    ADPKD occurs in the world at 1: 400-1: 1000 people and accounts for approximately 4% of chronic kidney diseases (CKD). In more than 90% of cases, the disease is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait that is characterized by spontaneous mutations. Mutations in the PKD-1 gene on the 16 chromosomes (ADPKD-1) account for 85% of the cases, whereas the mutations in the PKD-2 gene on the 4 chromosomes (ADPKD-2) represent the remaining 15%.

    Further, ADPKD is presented with abdominal discomfort, hematuria, urinary tract infection, sudden onset of hypertension, bulging in the abdomen, increased creatinine in the blood, or cystic vesicles in the early stages. As a rule, patients feel kidney pain, and, later, kidney failure develops. However, these symptoms differ with various stages of ADPKD presentation. The stages of ADPKD are divided into 5 stages. They are,

    Stage 1: Asymptomatic or mild form of kidney disease with normal glomerular filtration rate (>90%)

    Stage 2: Presents with mild form of kidney disease with GFR of 60-89%

    Stage 3: Moderate form of kidney disease with GFR 30-59%

    Stage 4: Severe form of kidney disease with GFR 15-29%

    Stage 5: Severe form of kidney disease with kidney failure and GFR < 15%

    Moreover, the probability of detecting kidney disease with ultrasound is 100% for subjects older than 30 years with a positive family history. Diagnostic criteria require the presence of two or more cysts in one kidney and at least one cyst in the opposite kidney in young adults, and over the age of 60 years of four or more cysts due to an increase in the frequency of simple benign cysts. Most often the diagnosis is made in connection with a positive family history and medical imaging, which indicate multiple bilateral cysts in the kidneys and, possibly, in the liver. At the age of 30 years, computed tomography (CT) or T2-weighted MRI are more reliable means of detecting premature disease. The ultrasound examination reveals Type 1 ADPKD in 95% of cases and Type 2 ADPKD in 70% of cases. After the examination, a genetic consultation is necessary. In 5% of patients with this disease, the probability of an aneurysm of cerebral vessels increases.
